McGovern RIP

George McGovern passed away today. He was a decent man and one of my favorite politicians. If you think politics are bad now, notice this:

despite having lost his US Senate seat in 1980 to a hard-right candidate who’d portrayed McGovern as unpatriotic and antifamily. (McGovern was a decorated WWII bomber pilot, devout Methodist, and devoted family man who’d been married to his wife since 1943.)

And yet James Abdnor (who defeated McGovern in 1980) was known as a decent person himself. Anyway, George McGovern was the first I voted for President (in 1984 in the primaries) and is still probably the person I most enthusiastically voted for.
