It seems that something happened to the pipe carrying water to Boston and surrounding communities (including here in Waltham) and we now have to boil water (the MWRA has updates here). It’s a bit annoying, but I think I can deal with it (I actually know how to boil water and a lakehouse I went to when I was a kid didn’t have running water). As always, some of the information is a bit contradictory (so it’s ok to wash my hands with the water in a shower, but not a sink?):
Bathing and Showering
Young children should be given sponge baths rather than put in a bathtub where they might ingest the tap water. Adults or children should take care not to swallow water when showering.…
Hand Washing
Use only boiled or disinfected water for hand washing.
but the idea is pretty simple. Ah well, hopefully things will be fixed fairly soon.
Update: it seems that we might have clean tap water back fairly soon:
“The pipe held,” Convery said today. “We are back on the regular system and pending water tests, we expect to have [drinking water restored] within 24 to 48 hours.”
